A One and Two For 500 Social Media Marketing Tips

As any Kindle writer will tell you, checking up on the current ranking of your book in the Amazon Bestseller chart quickly becomes something of a daily routine. The nature of sales means that I'll usually have risen or dropped a handful (or more) of places every time I check, but when I took a look this morning at 500 Social Media Marketing Tips' position on Amazon UK, I had a bit of a shock.

As you can see in the screen grab above, 500 Social Media Marketing Tips was sitting at #1 and #2 in the E-commerce Bestseller charts, the Kindle version occupying the #1 spot and the paperback at #2. This situation probably won't exist for very long or happen very many times in future, but it was definitely the highlight of a dreary Sunday morning.

YouTube One Channel Template 2013 Layout FREE Download Photoshop PSD

youtube-one-channel-template-photoshop-psd-download-2013.jpg

YouTube has begun to roll out a new channel layout, which it is calling the One Channel design. At the time of writing (March 1st, 2013), the new layout is in limited beta to a select few people, but will soon be available to all. In this post, you will find a few tips to help you prepare your channel to make the most of the new layout, as well as Photoshop .psd template to help you quickly and easily create artwork that fits the new layout and displays optimally on all devices, from smartphones to massive HD televisions.

jacksgap-one-channel.PNG

Above is an example of the new YouTube One Channel template, which you can see is a lot more minimalist in fashion than the current layout. The artwork features the channel's profile photo to the left and links to the channel's website and social media profiles on the right. This particular design is the desktop display, but the One Channel layout's art will display differently depending on the device the site is being viewed on, so your art and template must be prepared accordingly.

Now here's the template for the One Channel layout. YouTube recommends uploading an image that is 2120 x 1192 pixels in size. The area shaded green covers the art that will be seen on TVs, the yellow (full width of image) covers the maximum that will be seen on desktop, the blue area marks the boundaries of the design seen on tablets, and the pink rectangle marks the space where the art work will be seen at a minimum on desktops, and on mobile devices.

In the above example, I have edited the template to feature a design that sits only within the safe (pink) zone, which will show on all devices, from televisions to smartphones. Your art could spread across the whole area of the template - where I just have white - but it is crucial that the most important portion of the design (i.e. the one you want all viewers to see) is within the safe (pink) zone.

I hope this blog post has given you a little better understanding of the new YouTube One Channel Layout.

How to Optimize Facebook 'About' Section For Mobile Users

fb-optimize-about-section.jpg

In my book, 500 Social Media Marketing Tips, I suggest that brands who have set up a page that is not  categorized their page as a Local Business, should include clickable links and a call to action in the 'About' section of their Facebook page, as it appears front and centre for all visitors to their page to see - and hopefully click on!

Then, the other day I noticed a curious difference between the way that the Facebook 'About' section displays on desktop compared to its mobile app.

Here's the 'About' section on Facebook for desktop. There's three lines of text on display, and I've squeezed in two clickable URLS to purchase my book on Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.

To see the full 'About' section, a user must click through. As you can see, there are a further two lines here, with clickable links to the paperback version of my book.

Now, here's the mobile version of my page. As you can see, unlike the desktop version of Facebook, the About section displays in its entirety. On the iPhone 4S, this works out at about six lines of text - although I'm sure there is an exact character limit. I did try to add even more text, but this is the maximum that Facebook would allow.

The benefits here are obvious - everything you want to say about your business in the About section will be seen my mobile viewers, whether that be a blurb about you, or multiple links to products and offerings.  And with the number of people access Facebook via mobile skyrocketing, I'd urge you to make the most of all this space has to offer you!

500 Social Media Marketing Tips Paperback hits #1 on Amazon UK

top-paperback.jpg

Throughout January, encouraged by online acquaintances, I prepared 500 Social Media Marketing Tips for launch in paperback via Createspace.com. I had been reluctant to go down this route in the past because I update the book for Kindle every month, and I knew I wouldn't be able to be so flexible with a physical version of the book. Nevertheless, I edited furiously, re-designed the book's front cover, created a new back cover, and sent it off for approval. After three proof copies, I was happy with the final result and 500 Social Media Marketing Tips the paperback was launched!

Following the launch, I took a few weeks off for vacation. Every so often I would check my smartphone to see if I had notched up any sales of the paperback, and to my surprise, I had. In fact, by the time I started work again today (February 25th), the paperback version of 500 Social Media Marketing Tips had reached the #1 spot for three categories in the Amazon UK chart and established itself in the US store too, even outperforming its Kindle counterpart. All that with very little promotion, and no official launch strategy. To say I was surprised is an understatement.

If you would like to grab your own copy of 500 Social Media Marketing Tips in paperback, it's available for $9.99 in the US and £7.69 in the UK. Click here to buy:
